Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie has named former Twitter executive Ned Segal as his Chief of Housing and Economic Development, signaling a focus on revitalizing San Francisco's core urban areas and addressing housing constraints. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the announcement came on the heels of a series of strategic appointments to streamline Mayor Lurie's office and increase efficiency. Segal, who also served as co-chair for Lurie's campaign, is expected to bring his private sector expertise to economic development and housing affordability challenges.
“I’m proud to announce the appointment of Ned Segal as Chief of Housing and Economic Development. Ned embodies the kind of innovative leadership San Francisco desperately needs to tackle our most pressing challenges," Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie said, as per Mission Local. Segal will coordinate efforts among critical departments, overseeing a combined budget of about $3 billion to rejuvenate downtown and get more housing projects off the ground rapidly. Lurie's appointment of Segal is part of a broader plan to reorient the structure of city leadership to better address San Francisco's fiscal deficit, now estimated at $876 million over two years.
The city's budget crisis looms overhead, adding urgency to the need for effective economic growth strategies. "The City faces a budget crisis, and returning to meaningful economic growth will be critical to helping San Francisco and San Franciscans thrive," Segal told Mission Local in an interview. Lurie has outlined two primary goals for Segal: revitalizing downtown to reattract tourists and businesses and accelerating new housing construction. The appointment reflects Lurie's confidence in Segal's ability to steer the city towards essential economic recovery.
Highlighting Segal's strong background, Mayor-elect Lurie noted in a press release, as per the San Francisco Chronicle, "With his strong background in the private sector, a deep love for San Francisco backed by extensive civic engagement, and a track record of delivering results, Ned is uniquely positioned to lead the revitalization of downtown, accelerate housing production, and drive economic growth in our City." Endorsements from key figures in the tech community, like Ruth Porat of Alphabet and Chris Larsen of Ripple, further cement Segal's reputation as a capable business leader poised to make impactful changes.
