Four individuals sustained injuries early today after an SUV collided with a taxi and a light pole near a popular West Town music venue. The incident, which resulted in the SUV coming to an abrupt stop on the sidewalk, occurred in the 1300 block of North Elston Avenue, directly across from the Salt Shed, as reported by WGN-TV.
According to Chicago police, the accident happened at around 1:45 a.m. when a 20-year-old man, driving the SUV, sideswiped a taxi before impacting the light pole. Following the crash, occupants of the vehicle found themselves ensnared within the confines of the car, prompting rescue personnel to enter through the rear to retrieve them. Police stated that the four individuals in the SUV, including the driver, were transported to local hospitals with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, the taxi driver walked away from the incident unharmed, and no other bystanders were injured, CBS Chicago detailed.
Both male and, female passengers from the SUV were admitted to Northwestern Hospital, while the remaining two male passengers were sent to Illinois Masonic Hospital. The identities of those involved have not been disclosed, and authorities have yet to provide a statement regarding the cause of the collision or the potential influence of alcohol or drugs.
As daylight approached, police had cleared the scene and no significant traffic disruptions were reported in the area. Details remain scant, and as of now, the Chicago Police Department has not issued any updates on the status of the injured, or any charges that might be pending against the driver.
