The final scores are in at Level 1 Arcade Bar in downtown Gilbert, a popular spot for classic arcade games and a relaxed vibe. The bar will close its doors for good on January 18, according to ABC15.
Social media posts from the establishment shared a heartfelt message to its patrons. "Thank you for the laughs. Thank you for the fun times. Thank you for the parties and for the costume nights and the friendships and even for the tears as we write this..." The owners also specified the end of their five-year lease as a prime reason for the closure of the Gilbert location of Level 1, after opening its doors back in 2019 to offer adults a nostalgia-laden sanctuary, as reported by ABC15.
The communal joy of arcade nostalgia was the cornerstone of Level 1, envisioned by TJ Tillman and his team as a place to unwind with classic games in a setting reminiscent of a simpler time. As Tillman told ABC15 at the bar's inception, "We're all 80s and 90s kids that grew up on arcade games, and just sometimes want to go back to that carefree time where you can go and chill with your friends, play some old arcade games like you used to, and have a drink." The concept clearly resonated, judging by the patron's response to the closure announcement.
While the original Level 1 Arcade Bar in Gilbert is closing on January 18, the newer downtown Mesa location, which opened in 2023, will stay open for fans of classic arcade games. Additionally, the owners are planning a new Gilbert location set to open in 2025. As per Phoenix New Times, more details on this upcoming venue will be shared soon, boosting both the brand and the local nightlife scene.
