Hamilton County residents facing family law disputes are set to benefit from a new Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program introduced by the local Circuit and Superior Courts, slated to commence right after the new calendar page turns to January. The initiative seeks to quickly and more affordably resolve conflicts while lightening the courts' docket load. In a statement obtained by Hamilton County's official announcement, Circuit Court Judge Andrew Bloch emphasized the county judiciary's commitment to providing "practical and compassionate solutions" during trying family times.
The program is particularly aimed at aiding low-income families, with a sliding fee scale set to ensure affordability based on income. Families earning below $35,000 annually could to truly benefit from services like mediation and parenting classes, capped with a co-payment that won't exceed $100. Judge Bloch adds the rationale behind the move, stating, "Research shows that mediation leads to higher satisfaction and more durable solutions than drawn-out, contentious court battles," according to Hamilton County website.
Such accessibility to resources might break new ground for struggling families aiming to steer clear from often debilitating and expensive court disputes. Starting January 1, 2025, the county will implement an increase in filing fees for divorce and related cases by $20.00. These additional funds, alongside a grant from the Indiana Supreme Court, will support the ADR program which expects to be self-sufficient after its inaugural year.
For those still questioning the fee hike concerns, the added cost is to directly assist in maintaining the newly established program. It's a trade-off Hamilton County officials seem to bank on will result in long-term savings and emotional relief for those entangled in the usually long-winded legal processes. With the Indiana Supreme Court backing it with grant money, the sustainability of the initiative appears to have been carefully considered, ensuring the court can continue to offer these services in perpetuity.
