A pedestrian lost his life in a tragic incident that occurred early this morning in the Ocean Beach neighborhood. The hit-and-run collision occurred around 4:49 a.m. on the 4500 block of Nimitz Boulevard, as confirmed in an official report from Officer D. O'Brien, according to the San Diego Police Department Watch Commander's Log.
The victim, a 20-year-old, was reportedly running eastbound on West Point Loma Boulevard when they attempted to cross Nimitz Boulevard against the red light. It was during this moment that a black 2018 BMW, which appeared to be involved in a street race with a white Ford Mustang, struck the pedestrian, the San Diego Police Department states. Following the collision, the BMW driver fled the scene, but the vehicle was subsequently located unoccupied at 3500 Canon Street.
The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division has taken charge of the investigation. Unfortunately, first responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene of the accident. The circumstances leading up to the collision and the search for the person behind the wheel of the BMW remain ongoing.
