Early morning commuters on I-57 southbound faced unexpected delays following a crash near Sauk Trail, leading to a complete shutdown of the roadway. As per the Illinois State Police, as reported by NBC Chicago, the collision between a sedan and a semi occurred right before the stroke of 7 a.m., just north of the trail. The severity of the incident prompted authorities to direct a clear advisory to motorists: "At this time, all southbound lanes of I-57 are shut down. Expect delays."
Caught in the snarl of immobilized autos, with the early dawn still spreading its light, traffic was reported solid from Vollmer Road, according to Total Traffic. As the clock struck half past eight in the morning, the Illinois State Police updated the situation, asserting that movement was "slowly" being restored via the shoulder, while the main lanes were anticipated to remain closed for a span yet to be determined. They reiterated the need for patience and precaution, stating, "Expect delays and seek an alternate route if possible."
Adding to the narrative of disruption, ABC7 Chicago detailed a more personal aspect of the event. It reported that the driver of the sedan, having veered off the road, slammed into a semi that was parked on the shoulder. This resulted in the immediate necessity for extrication from the wrecked vehicle and subsequent transport to a local hospital, bearing injuries of an indeterminate severity.
All southbound lanes were temporarily sealed from the public between U.S. 30 and Sauk Trail following the mishap, with Chopper 7 capturing aerial views of the scene. After several hours of effort and navigation, however, normalcy began to edge back onto I-57; as of 11:10 a.m., all lanes had been reopened. While the situation on the road has ameliorated, the authorities were yet to provide further details at the time of reporting.
