An Illinois man has been hit with a decade behind bars for his role in a large-scale meth trafficking operation. Forty-two-year-old Cruz Vargas, Jr. from the state known for its Great Lakes connection was dealt a 120-month prison sentence Tuesday and will face another five years of supervised release thereafter, as mandated by Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane after Vargas had pleaded guilty, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Texas.

During a routine border crossing inspection on July 24, 2022, Vargas was stopped by authorities after attempting to pass large containers labeled as vitamins, through the Rio Grande Port of Entry, but a narcotics detection K-9 sounded the alarm subsequently a secondary inspection revealed the containers were laden with meth. The substance weighed in at over 50 kilograms, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Texas. After his initial claim, tests confirmed the presence of the illegal drug, leading to Vargas' admission of his involvement in drug transport and eventually, his guilty plea.

As the full weight of justice descends, Vargas will remain in custody until he can be transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons location not yet disclosed. The investigation was the work of Homeland Security Investigations in collaboration with Customs and Border Protection, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Cahal P. McColgan led the prosecution.
