Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers engaged in a foot pursuit that ended in an armed suspect being shot on yesterday afternoon in the city's west side. The suspect sustained a graze wound to the neck after an IMPD officer returned fire during the chase. The incident, which took place around 3:30 p.m. near the Cloverleaf Apartments, began after reports of gunfire within the apartment complex, as confirmed by FOX59.
Responding to the 900 block of South Kiel Avenue, officers were informed by a 911 caller that the suspect, described as a male and believed to be armed, had fled the scene but was still in the vicinity. With a description provided by the caller, the police later located the suspect in the complex. According to a witness account obtained by WTHR, a still-armed suspect resumed fleeing after failing to comply with officers' verbal commands.
The pursuit continued for several blocks, culminating on the 1100 block of Waldemere Avenue. There, IMPD reports indicate the suspect discharged a firearm at a marked police vehicle. In response, one of the officers on foot chase returned fire, striking the suspect. "Officers gave medical aid to the suspect before he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition," according to information released by WRTV.
During the incident, no officers or uninvolved community members were harmed. The wounded suspect was apprehended and a firearm was recovered near him. Following the shooting, IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team took on the criminal investigation and the officer involved was placed on administrative leave, a step confirmed by WRTV to be part of standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.
Further countering this threat to peace, the incident sparked a statement from Indy FOP president Rick Snyder emphasizing the dangers officers frequently face, as reported by WTHR: “Tonight, another tragedy was averted as an Armed Suspect allegedly fired upon IMPD Officers. Fortunately, no officers were struck...”. Snyder also referenced a tally indicating the frequency of officer shootings nationwide, underscoring the potentially fatal risks encountered by law enforcement.
Looking ahead, a mandatory hearing before the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will be conducted post-criminal process to examine the application of deadly force in this case.
