As the chill of December settles over the state of Indiana, the Indiana State Police issue a firm reminder to residents: decking out your vehicles with Christmas lights is more than just seasonal cheer—it's a violation of the law. According to a recent social media advisory from ISP's Lowell District, there's been a noticeable uptick in these brightly lit cars as Hoosiers get into the holiday spirit.
In a statement obtained by FOX59, authorities highlighted the illegality of this practice, underscoring the distraction it poses to other drivers on the road. The report also featured an incident investigated by Bolingbrook, Illinois police, where a vehicle was adorned with an array of festive lights in green, red, purple, and yellow colors. ISP warned, "This may look festive, it is not legal and it is a distraction. Please don’t drive with Christmas lights draped over your car."
Adding to the clarion call, a report by WTHR included photos illustrating the extent of such decorations, which showcased an SUV complete with a holiday light display, candy canes, and even a Christmas tree mounted on the roof. Acknowledging the allure of the festal ornamentation, ISP still urged drivers to confine their yuletide expressions to their homes and trees, not their cars.
Under Indiana Code 9-21-7-10, as WRTV reported, the scope of the law is explicit: white or amber is the only palette of light allowed to beam from the front and back of a non-emergency vehicle. Variations like blue, green, and especially red, the color of Santa's garb, are expressly prohibited. "We didn’t write the law, but it is on the books," ISP explained, aiming to anticipate the season's missteps by issuing early warnings to the drivers throughout the Hoosier State.
Hoosiers found to be in violation could be subjected to a traffic stop and further penalties. Therefore, while Indiana State Police recognize the community's enthusiasm for holiday decorating, they stress the importance of adhering to the motor vehicle codes to ensure safety on the roads during the festive season.
