An act of quick thinking and decisive action by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer has garnered praise after bodycam footage was released showcasing her efforts to save a newborn's life. The incident, captured on video, spotlights Officer Kelly Chappell's response to a dire emergency involving an unresponsive infant just minutes after its birth. According to FOX59, the call came through on Oct. 1, when Officer Chappell was dispatched to a residence in the IMPD's East District.
The bodycam footage shared by IMPD illustrates the critical moments Chappell engaged with, providing chest compressions to the struggling newborn. The woman, who reportedly didn't know she was pregnant, had given birth to the baby girl at home. As detailed by WTHR, Chappell's quick intervention continued until the arrival of firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department, who took over to clear the baby's airway.
The newborn was then transported to Riley Children’s Hospital where she is reportedly recovering. The timely rescue efforts were further highlighted in IMPD's "Sworn to Serve" bodycam series. The series, which periodically shares the work of officers, praised not only Chappell's actions but also recognized the collaborative effort by the Indianapolis Fire Department and Indianapolis EMS, as mentioned in a post on IMPD News' official Facebook page.
