Over the weekend, a series of violent encounters at Hardeman County Correctional Facility resulted in the death of an inmate, with several others injured. The facility, operated by CoreCivic, experienced multiple, possibly interconnected, altercations involving a group of inmates around 12:25 a.m. Saturday, as Action News 5 reported.

Staff members promptly intervened to stop the fights and provided first aid until further medical assistance arrived. CoreCivic's public affairs director, Ryan Gustin, stated, "HCCF staff intervened and provided medical assistance to those who were hurt. Six inmates were reportedly taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for their injuries." Consequently, six inmates required hospitalization for their injuries, according to information obtained by WREG.

Later, one of the affected inmates died from the sustained harm and was pronounced dead at around 3:49 a.m. While two inmates continue to receive care in the hospital, three have been transferred back to the correctional facility. No staff members were reportedly injured during the incidents.

The Tennessee Department of Correction was immediately informed of the incidents and its Office of Investigations and Conduct is overseeing the investigation. In a statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, an HCCF spokesperson mentioned that the facility "notified the Tennessee Department of Corrections as soon as the fights took place." Further details may arise as the investigation into the cause and nature of the fights continues.
