In the early morning of Wednesday, a 39-year-old man passed away following an encounter with Joliet police at a local gas station. According to ABC7 Chicago, the Joliet Police Department responded to a distress call at approximately 4:35 a.m. at a Shell station on South Larkin Avenue. The man, who had alerted police to a potential threat to his life, was reported to display "erratic behavior" upon their arrival, leading authorities to believe he was under the influence of an unidentified substance.
Efforts to detain the individual resulted in a physical struggle and a subsequent fall, after which the man was handcuffed and lost consciousness. Police said the 39-year-old lost consciousness and officers deployed Narcan, as reported by NBC Chicago. The man was then rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His vehicle, found crashed into a tree and having collided with a fence, hinted at a prior incident. Details remain scant pending further investigation, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. The Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is currently investigating the situation.
