In a move to alleviate overcrowding and enhance educational opportunities, the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education has unanimously passed a measure to redraw school attendance zones for the incoming 2025-2026 academic year. The changes, which affect elementary, middle, and high schools within the district, are intended to distribute students more evenly and optimize transport routes, as reported by KFOX-TV.
"We are grateful for the work of the committee, our school administrators and parents who participated in this process," said LCPS Chief of Student Services and Community Relations, Sherly O’Brien. "Their commitment to this district ensures equitable learning spaces that will allow all students to thrive, which is the mission of our district," O’Brien expressed, as obtained by KTSM.
The revision of school attendance zones includes a particular focus on middle schools, adopting what has been referred to as Option 3. This will involve six campuses: Camino Real, Lynn, Picacho, Sierra, Vista, and Zia. It has been confirmed that Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy will continue to operate as a school of choice, unaffected by the zone restructuring. According to KVIA, the shift will impact around 5.5% of middle school students within the district.
While the new zoning is set to roll out in the 2025 school year, it is evident that planners have worked to minimize disruptions as only a small fraction of the student body will need to shift to new schools. The primary goal remains to ensure that students can access the educational resources they need without overwhelming any single campus. This balance officials hope will be achieved with the revised zones. What remains to be observed, however, is how these well-intentioned plans will unfold in the daily lives of the students, teachers, and families who will navigate the altered landscape of Las Cruces' public education come 2025.
