A tragic collision on Indianapolis' north side has resulted in the loss of a woman's life late yesterday night, marking yet another road incident in a city beleaguered by traffic fatalities. At approximately 10:08 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of W. 79th Street and N. Meridian Street, following reports of a serious crash, according to FOX59.
The preliminary investigation suggests that two single-occupant vehicles collided head-on, with one of the vehicles erupting into flames. Attempts by an officer and a bystander to rescue the trapped woman from the flaming car proved futile, she was pronounced deceased at the scene, as mentioned on FOX59. The second driver involved in the crash, was not injured, and remained on-site cooperating with the authorities.
In a separate report by WISH-TV, it was revealed that the collision involved the woman’s vehicle and a truck. The truck driver’s condition and potential injuries remain unknown, but they have been confirmed as participating in the investigation. This tragic incident was the second of its kind last night, following an earlier crash reported on the west side of the city.
The aftermath of the crash necessitated the closure of North Meridian Street as police conducted their investigation, reported WTHR. Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and have not released further details at this time.
