Menard, Texas, has recently achieved the designation of a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community, as proudly announced by Governor Greg Abbott, recognizing the city's efforts and commitment to strengthening tourism as a key economic driver; this honor comes in the first year of the newly established program by Travel Texas, a sector of the Governor's Economic Development & Tourism Office. Drawing attention to the economic significance of travel and hospitality, Governor Abbott emphasized in a statement, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas," highlighting that travelers generated over $193.8 billion and upheld 1.3 million jobs in 2023, according to a press release by the Governor's office.

Menard's newly acquired status is expected to lead to increased job creation and a rise in visitor numbers to the community and the broader Texas region. Governor Abbott has also encouraged other communities to seek this designation to support local tourism and economic growth. "Menard is a place where Texas history and natural beauty come together to create a hidden gem destination," said Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell in the press release, who emphasized the city’s combination of historical sites like Presidio San Saba, outdoor activities along the San Saba River, and a diversified offering from vacation rentals to live music and dining experiences that provide a vibrant local atmosphere.

Menard's achievement received praise from both state and local leaders, with Senator Charles Perry expressing pride in representing the community and Menard Mayor Barbara Hooten extending an open invitation to prospective visitors by quoting, "Menard offers something for everyone from historical adventures, water adventures, fabulous food choices, live music, lots of places to stay, and even wedding venues," Mayor Hooten added, "come see us!" Cherry Swindall of Menard County Chamber of Commerce expressed excitement for the opportunities this recognition brings forth: "Menard has always been a great place to live and work, but with this certification we can bring attention to why we want people to come visit us," she said, in a statement obtained by the Governor's office.

The program Menard has joined, available to local governments or non-profit organizations leading tourism efforts, offers a range of benefits, including opportunities for strategic relationship building, education on tourism’s economic impact, development strategy prioritization, and access to state resources supporting tourism initiatives.
