The child's quick-thinking older brother and a family friend began a desperate search upon discovering the younger boy was missing, eventually finding them more than a mile away from their home the two were walking hand in hand, as stated in the WSVN report.

The brother confronted Martinez Reyes, which led to a physical altercation—during the skirmish, Reyes claimed the child was his own, but the older sibling managed to retrieve the 6-year-old and get him to safety; Miami-Dade Police were then called to the scene where Martinez Reyes was detained.
