A Thanksgiving Day tragedy unfolded near Miami International Airport where a hit-and-run accident resulted in the death of a man. The incident, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at 2100 NW 42nd Avenue, has led to the arrest of ramp worker Gerson Jean, 38, on felony charges. Jean is accused of hitting the pedestrian with his vehicle and failing to provide aid or alert authorities, Local 10 reported.
After striking the victim, who was later taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, the victim died less than 24 hours following the crash. Surveillance footage from the airport captured the grim incident involving Jean's gray Kia K5, which "struck and vaulted the victim onto the roadway," according to the arrest report obtained by NBC Miami. Subsequent investigation led authorities to a body shop in Lauderhill where Jean's damaged Kia was discovered.
When Jean arrived at the body shop last Friday, he was taken into custody by the Miami-Dade Police. His post-Miranda statement to authorities was redacted from the arrest report, yet he is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with charges of leaving the scene of a crash causing death and attempted evidence tampering, as reported by Local 10.
The Miami-Dade Police initially faced challenges in their investigation due to the lack of vehicle description. However, Detective Andre D. Martin, as Hoodline disclosed, had asked for the public's help in apprehending the suspect. Despite the early morning closure of lanes near the accident scene, airport operations continued with minimal interruptions, and traffic was normalized soon afterward, NBC Miami noted.
The identity of the victim has not been released, and the authorities continue their investigation. Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers are still open to receiving any further information from the public regarding the tragic incident.
