A juvenile has been taken into custody after a reported armed carjacking incident in the Indianapolis area, as per the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The crime occurred in the early hours of this past Saturday on the 3000 block of N. Illinois St., where the suspect and two others, whose identities remain unknown, allegedly approached the victim and demanded the car keys at gunpoint. The stolen vehicle, a Dodge Journey, was subsequently involved in a police chase that ended with a crash on Harvest Ave. "Three masked individuals approached him, pointed a firearm, and said 'give me the keys'," the victim recounted, according to FOX59. The minor was arrested and faces several charges including a Level 3 Felony for the armed carjacking.
Following the theft, IMPD officers spotted the stolen vehicle at approximately 12:45 a.m., and what ensued was a pursuit that concluded with the vehicle crashing, reports WRTV. The three occupants fled the scene on foot, however, only one was apprehended with help from police K9 and drone units, the other two evaded capture. The apprehended juvenile faces charges for armed carjacking, auto theft, resisting law enforcement, and refusal to identify, the car, last spotted going northbound near the intersection of 30th and Sherman before the crash.
The incident not only adds to the list of juvenile-related crimes in the area but also prompts concerns about the rise in violent carjackings. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is actively searching for the two remaining suspects who are still at large and has requested public assistance. Detective Todd Lappin is the point of contact for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the two suspects, suggests WTHR. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will ultimately decide on the charges for the arrested juvenile.
Despite the violent nature of the offense, the law enforcement's response employing a K9 and drones showcases the integration of technology in modern policing methods. The IMPD has encouraged anyone with information about the missing suspects' identities, to reach out to Detective Lappin at [email protected] or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS. "Anyone with information can contact Detective Todd Lappin directly at [email protected] or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS," stated a representative from IMPD, indicating that there may be a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest, as per FOX59.
