The Los Angeles Police Department gave an update on the case of 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi, who had been missing for weeks. Surveillance footage showed her crossing into Mexico on November 12 with her luggage and looking unharmed. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said, "She was alone, with her luggage, and appeared unharmed." The case is now considered a voluntary missing person, and the Los Angeles Police Department is asking Kobayashi to contact her family or authorities to confirm she is safe, according to Hawaii News Now.
Before she disappeared, Kobayashi had expressed a desire to disconnect from modern communication. "By looking at her past social media, we then saw indicators that there were some desires or posts that would be consistent in somebody who would want to disconnect from their phone," said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Douglas Oldfield to KITV. During the investigation, her family reported receiving strange text messages, and Kobayashi's father tragically passed away, reportedly by suicide, which complicated the situation.
Kobayashi went missing after missing a connecting flight at LAX last month. Her last known actions included picking up her checked baggage for New York and then taking a bus to San Diego. Her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, said, "Strange, cryptic messages – things about the matrix, it was so unlike her." Social media posts caused more confusion, and the Los Angeles Police Department stopped searching beyond the US-Mexico border but will resume if she returns. There is no evidence of a crime. Her sister, Sydni, closed a Facebook group for the search due to negative comments and threats, as reported by Hoodline.
