The tragic suicide of 10-year-old Sammy Teusch has led his parents to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation, alleging the school failed to adequately protect their son from bullying. According to WRTV, the lawsuit, which was filed in Hancock County Circuit Court, cites the severe bullying that Sammy endured, including being chased, punched, and even choked.
Brian Grossman, co-counsel for the Teusch family, expressed the gravity of the situation in a statement obtained by The Indiana Lawyer, saying, "This suit is about more than holding the Greenfield School Corporation accountable, it’s about making sure no child ever experiences what Sammy experienced – and no family again experiences the heartbreak the Teusch family can now never escape." Despite the Teusch family's numerous reports of bullying to school officials, no substantive action was taken to protect Sammy, who began attending the Greenfield school around 1.5 years prior to his death.
Sam Teusch, the father of the deceased, has been vocally pushing for change, recounting over 20 attempts to get help from school officials that were apparently ignored. "We have to make changes," Sam Teusch said in an interview with WISH-TV. He emphasizes the need for a "better environment for our children at school, a safer place," insisting that this tragedy should be a catalyst for systemic change within the educational atmosphere, ensuring the well-being of all students.
Reports tell of multiple instances of physical and psychological torment, including one where Sammy was hit in the head with an iPad so hard that it broke his glasses and gave him a black eye, according to the The Indiana Lawyer report. Despite these ongoing incidents and, despite approximately 20 reports made by Teusch's parents through various channels, their son’s treatment at the hands of bullies continued unchecked until his untimely death. Aimed at the Greenfield-Central School Corporation and its board of trustees, the lawsuit places direct blame on school administrators for their alleged inaction and negligence.
In the wake of their loss, the Teusch family is calling for accountability, and at the heart of their plea, is a desire to transform the school system into a sanctuary for young minds. "And it seems that made him an easy target and easy for school officials to dismiss and disregard him – and we can't let the world be like that," Sam Teusch said, lamenting the cruel fate that befell his son. The lawsuit demands not only justice for Sammy but also encompassing reforms that will ensure that future children will be protected, heard, and valued within their educational environments, as detailed by WRTV.
