A Phoenix woman, Rachel Henry, has pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of her three young children. The change in plea was recorded during a hearing held on December 12, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. The plea agreement comes nearly four years after the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 3-year-old Zane Henry, 23-month-old Miraya Henry, and 7-month-old Catalaya Rios.
The case that has been looming over the city since January 2020 began to move towards resolution after Henry decided to publicly acknowledge her guilt, abandoning her previous not-guilty plea entered in February of the same year. The heavy burden of this case weighs on the community, as expressed in a body-camera video obtained by AZFamily, which showed Henry to be emotional and claim ignorance of the cause of her children's death shortly after the bodies were discovered.
Detailed accounts of the incident reveal a grim reality, contradicting Henry's initial claims to police. Upon her arrest, it was disclosed that she had smothered each of her children. "I put them down to take a nap and I didn’t check on them and I thought they were sleeping," Henry said, as stated by AZFamily. Later, however, the narrative turned sharply as detectives reported that Henry confessed to purposefully smothering her three children one by one.
With the guilty plea now formally submitted, the original course prosecutors intended to take has been significantly altered. They had once aimed to probably prosecute Henry to the fullest extent, thereby seeking the death penalty, but this option has now been set aside. As per the plea agreement, and as stated by the judge during the December 12 hearing, Henry will instead receive life sentences for each count, detailed further in the AZFamily report. Her official sentencing has been scheduled for February 14.
