After an extensive search that spanned several years, the remains of a man who vanished in 2019 have been discovered at the bottom of the Mississippi River in East Moline. According to information released by local authorities, the Big River Rescue and Recovery Team located a pickup truck submerged near the Empire Park boat ramp on September 15th, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
The vehicle, initially reported stolen from East Moline in 2017, contained human remains which were later determined through DNA analysis to be those of Daniel L. Claeys, whose disappearance had confounded the community. East Moline police are now conducting a homicide investigation, in an effort to fully understand the circumstances leading up to Claeys' death, ABC7 Chicago detailed.
Further details surrounding the case emerged when the Rock Island County Coroner's office confirmed Claeys' identity, providing a bittersweet resolution for the family that had been seeking answers for years. "Family has been notified and they now have some closure knowing their family member has been located," East Moline Police Chief Jeff Ramsey told ABC News. The pickup, entombed in deep mud, posed significant challenges during recovery efforts, highlighting the determination of investigators in the quest for resolution.
While the identification of Claeys' remains marks a significant development in the case, many questions remain unanswered. Police have yet to release information on how Claeys died or what could have possibly caused his death. Chief Jeff Ramsey, however, assured that the investigation will continue vigorously. "The East Moline Police Department continues to investigate this incident as a homicide," Ramsey affirmed in a statement obtained by ABC News.
