Travelers in South Jordan should plan for detours this weekend as the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) initiates a 10-month closure of 9800 South at Bangerter Highway starting tonight. According to UDOT, the shutdown begins at 10 p.m. on Friday, December 20, and is part of the ongoing effort to revamp the intersection into a freeway-style interchange with aims to streamline traffic flows and reduce congestion in the bustling area.
During the construction period, commuters will not have the usual thoroughfare at the intersection, east and westbound traffic on 9800 South will be unable to proceed straight through, but right turns onto Bangerter Highway will remain accessible, lane shifts and closures may create significant alterations in daily routes and it is encouraged that drivers seek alternative paths or prepare for potential delays in their commutes.
This redevelopment is one of the final pieces of a larger initiative dubbed the Bangerter South projects, which also includes transformations at 2700 West, 13400 South, and 4700 South, each progressing toward a planned completion in November 2025. Collectively, these projects aspire to enhance the highway system, supporting the growth of South Jordan and the neighboring regions as a nexus of economic and residential development.
Concerned drivers should keep in mind that while construction schedules are largely dependent on favorable weather conditions, they are also dynamically subject to change, so staying informed through reliable sources is paramount, UDOT advises the public to utilize their online resources such as the UDOT Traffic website and the downloadable UDOT Traffic app which is available for both iPhone and Android, and for those seeking real-time updates, UDOT's presence on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram can be exceptionally beneficial.
