Those with a cell phone number on file with the Post Office should expect a message from 91896, Summit County's number, which will offer an opt-out option by texting 'STOP' to disengage if that's their wish; however, for those who don't get the initial text, can still join in by texting "SUMMITCOUNTY" to 91896 and then confirming with a "YES".
It's not just a one-size-fits-all notification system, residents can personalize the alerts they receive. For updates on things like road construction or snow plowing from Public Works, they can text 'SCROADS' to 91896, while 'SCHEALTH' will keep them informed on health advisories, and 'SCBIKE' offers updates on Summit Bike Share. More categories for notifications are expected to be introduced next year, with the county promising additional convenience moving forward.
