Tampa Deputies Fatally Shoot Man Who Allegedly Aimed Gun During Welfare CheckSource: Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office

A lethal confrontation unfolded in Tampa yesterday night when Hillsborough County deputies fatally shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at them. The incident, which involved a 67-year-old man named Anthony Dadante, occurred after a distress call suggesting a suicide attempt gone awry.

Deputies responded to the call at around 11:15 p.m. at a residence on the 10000 block of Courtney Palm Boulevard, as reported by ABC Action News. Upon arrival, deputies Jose Rodriguez and Jenna Roberts found Dadante in a bathtub, bloodied and armed.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), Dadante pointed the firearm at Deputy Rodriguez after refusing multiple commands to drop the gun, prompting the deputies to shoot.

Both deputies involved in the shooting had no prior incidents of using force in their records. Deputy Rodriguez has been with the HCSO since March 2022 and Deputy Roberts since September 2017. Dadante, who had no known criminal history, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the aftermath, Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed the psychological toll the holidays can impose, "The holidays can be a difficult time for many," Chronister said, adding, "If you're struggling and feeling overwhelmed, know you're not alone. Don't hesitate to reach out to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay." This sentiment echoes across all reports, reminding individuals in distress that help is available through the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, accessible via calling 211, as stated by WFLA News.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken charge of the investigation, which is standard protocol for deputy-involved shootings. Further details are awaited as the HCSO's Public Affairs Office has announced the release of body camera footage when available.
