A 17-year-old boy who was under suspicion for the shooting of a 2-year-old boy in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood has been released, as per the authorities. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office announced that while the teen had been taken into custody, no charges have been currently filed against him. "The minor was arrested by police regarding this incident and the case was referred to juvenile court. At this time, the matter is a continuing investigation and no charges have been filed," the statement read in part, according to a report by NBC Chicago.
This turn of events notably occurred after a critical incident where the 2-year-old was shot multiple times in a home on the 3800 block of West 14th Street just after 4 p.m. Thursday. The toddler was quickly taken to an area hospital and, as of the last update, was in critical condition. Originally, it was reported that the teen faced charges, but these were to later be rectified as a miscommunication. The teen is scheduled to reappear in court on Jan. 17, 2025, in connection to the investigation.
Upon responding to the incident, officers reportedly found a weapon at the scene. A person of interest was taken into custody Thursday night, which was relayed by Chicago police. However, details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting and how the juvenile came to be involved remain under investigation. As addressed by community activist Andrew Holmes, "Right now I’m just trying to figure out whose hands was that gun in," he told the Chicago Sun-Times. Holmes also stressed the importance of gun safety, especially in households with children, adding, "We’ve just got to be cautious around our babies and [know] who has these weapons."
Confusion initially arose as previous reports indicated that the 17-year-old had been charged with obstruction of justice and child endangerment. This information had been provided by the Chicago police but was later corrected.
