Utah Lake's ecosystem has been grappling with the pervasive issue of invasive carp, and state officials are now looking to anglers to aid in their removal, as reported by FOX13. To tackle this problem, a special event dubbed "The Great Carp Hunt" has been organized, encouraging participants with a range of prizes, including a chance to win a $1,000 monthly prize, with additional rewards for the longest, smallest, and heaviest carp caught.
The contest, set to kick off with its first event on January 25-26, is designed to be both competitive and conservation-centric. According to KSLTV, teams are encouraged to sign up to rapidly reduce the carp population and will be competing across various categories throughout the year. This isn't just a mere fishing trip, it's a strategic culling exercise, aiming to restore a balance long disrupted by these underwater intruders.
To take part in the event, interested parties can register online, though a registration fee is required, the exact amount of which is to be determined. The contest aims to be inclusive, inviting fishers of all ages to cast their lines in this environmental endeavor. As reported by ABC4, teams will "go out during event hours and catch as many carp as they can," competing for monthly and annual prizes.
