Yesterday, a wrongful-way collision on US 27 resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left three others injured, local law enforcement agencies report. The incident occurred near Mile Marker 85 around 2:35 a.m., as per the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office. A Ford Van, for reasons yet unknown, was traveling in the wrong direction and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Suburban.
The crash was sudden and severe, leading to the death of both drivers at the scene. The driver of the van remains unidentified while the driver of the Suburban, named as 24-year-old Damion Jones from South Bay, was confirmed deceased by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, as reported by CBS12. The sheer force of the collision caused the Chevrolet to spin out, and the van caught fire.
Three passengers from the Suburban were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. One remains in critical condition, while the others, identified as Alt'Lecia Johnson, 23, and Fa'Quandria Nation, 25, are dealing with serious injuries according to the Boca Raton Tribune. The circumstances that led to this tragic incident are still being pieced together by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division.
The ongoing investigation by the PBSO Traffic Homicide Unit preliminarily suggests that neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in this crash. However, officers have made it clear through public appeals for witnesses, that the investigation continues, and charges may be forthcoming as new information becomes available. PBSO urges anyone with information regarding the collision to step forward, using the PBSO mobile app or by calling 1-800-458-TIPS (8477).
