As the holiday season revs up, the Utah Department of Public Safety's Highway Safety Office (UHSO) is teaming up with the state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) and WCF Insurance in urging Utahns to plan a sober ride home. In a recently published release, officials announced a campaign to encourage residents to think ahead and avoid driving under the influence.
In a bid to keep roads safe, WCF Insurance is sponsoring a convenient $10 Uber ride credit voucher program for holidaygoers. In a concerted effort, the Utah Highway Patrol has shared plans to ramp up enforcement and will be disseminating DUI statistics, and crash data in the upcoming weeks. However, the primary goal of DPS’s campaign isn't to increase arrests, rather, it's to advocate for responsible planning and sober driving across the state.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the enhanced push for safety is in alignment with NHTSA’s National Winter Holiday DUI Enforcement Mobilization. Starting December 13th through New Year’s Day, over 30 law enforcement agencies will contribute to over 240 additional DUI shifts statewide.
The campaign is getting the word out with a media event scheduled for Thursday, December 12th, at Lake Effect in Salt Lake City. Expected to attend are Colonel Michael Rapich, of the Utah Highway Patrol, Tiffany Clason, Executive Director of DABS, and Ken Houting, the Senior VP of Middle Market for WCF Insurance, along with Trooper Davies Sanchez who will address Spanish-speaking audiences. Public service messages and visual elements like campaign posters will be distributed across local bars and liquor stores to reinforce the sober driving message.
