Skiers and snowboarders eyeing the slopes of northern Utah's mountains this weekend are cautioned to tread lightly and stay informed as avalanche dangers persist. As reported by ABC4 the Utah Avalanche Center issued a Special Avalanche Bulletin this past Saturday, cautioning outdoor enthusiasts of "considerable" avalanche danger in the Wasatch Range, Western Uinta Mountains, and the Bear River Range. This bulletin is in effect until 6 a.m. today.
The Utah Avalanche Center identified a persistent weak layer of snow contributing to the precarious conditions. According to KSLTV, strong winds, and new snowfall may overload this fragile base, significantly elevating the risk of slides. As eager winter sports enthusiasts approach these mountains, the looming threat of nature's latent power underlines the necessity for vigilance and preparedness in the face of this silent peril.
Individuals like Chris Stevenson, an avid snowboarder, are emphasizing the importance of being proactive with safety measures. "Definitely know before you go," Stevenson said, as per KUTV. He stressed the importance of checking snow conditions and the snowpack before embarking on backcountry adventures, to ensure one's excursion doesn't take a perilous turn.
