A juvenile detention counselor from Vernon Hills has been caught up in a misconduct case after allegations surfaced that she sent sexually explicit photos to a former detainee, a 17-year-old boy, after his release from the facility. Bayleigh Hoyt, 28, has been charged with official misconduct and distributing harmful material, according to authorities.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office, as reported by CBS News Chicago, stated that Hoyt was working at the Depke Juvenile Detention Facility when she began engaging in inappropriate communications with the teenager; this relationship progressed to the exchange of nude photographs and lewd conversations, after which Hoyt allegedly instructed the boy to delete the evidence, and not long after these events, she resigned from her position before law enforcement caught wind of the scandal.
After a warrant was issued this Tuesday, Hoyt was apprehended in Highland Park, WGN-TV reports. The circumstances leading to Hoyt's arrest raise considerable concerns about the safeguarding practices within institutions trusted to rehabilitate and protect young individuals who oftentimes are themselves struggling with the consequences of exploitative relationships.
Hoyt remains in the Lake County Jail and was expected to appear in court Wednesday morning for the charges pressed against her.
