Violence continued to grip the streets of Chicago over the weekend, with at least four people killed and 11 others wounded in a rash of shootings that spanned various neighborhoods, as CBS Chicago reported; the violence coincided with a South Deering car wreck late Sunday night that injured a 5-year-old boy and two women, a separate incident that unfolded in the 1600 block of East 103rd Street according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The youngest among the shooting victims was a 3-year-old boy, inadvertently struck by a bullet after a gunman fired a shot in the air during a confrontation in the 1000 block of West 14th Street; the boy, who was in a nearby apartment, was taken to Stroger Hospital suffering from a wound to the left ear, and in the South Deering car wreck incident, the young boy and two women were inside a Honda van when a violating driver ran a red light, smashed into their vehicle, and after the crash, fled the scene on foot, with the victims hospitalized and listed in good condition.
The weekend shootings displayed a troubling spectrum of violence, age victims ranged from the tender age of 3 to 46; the incidents included a 28-year-old man losing his life in West Adams Street after sustaining a gunshot to the head, and a 30-year-old man in critical condition after being found with gunshots to the face and chest in the 7800 block of South Bennett Avenue, the string of shootings reflected a relentless pattern that authorities grapple with on a nearly incessant basis.
Across the city, from the fatal shooting in North Pulaski Road’s business altercation to the drive-by incident on South Springfield Avenue ending with a vehicle crashing into a tree, the weekend in Chicago was punctuated by bursts of gunfire and the trailing lights of emergency vehicles cutting through the night. Meanwhile, the Chicago Police Department and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating an incident where two off-duty officers found themselves amidst a shootout with a yet-to-be-identified assailant, one civilian was injured during the melee.
