A deadly shooting at Morna Lounge and Grill in New Bedford led to the arrest of 19-year-old Danielson Varela. The shooting, which occurred last Saturday, left one man dead and two women injured. Varela was arrested last Sunday night in connection with the incident, according to NBC Boston.
Cristiano Macedo, 27, from New Bedford, was fatally wounded. Two women in their 20s were injured and hospitalized, but their condition is unknown. Varela faces first-degree murder and firearm charges and is set for arraignment in New Bedford District Court, as reported by WBSM.
The Morna Lounge and Grill has been linked to repeated violence, with the latest shooting on Acushnet Avenue prompting action from Mayor Jon Mitchell and Police Chief Paul Oliveira. Mitchell said, "will urge the City’s licensing board to hold accountable any establishment where there has been a pattern of police incidents, including the bar where (Saturday’s) incident took place." The suspect, Varela, has a criminal record, including a previous arrest for a shooting in February 2024. An upcoming arraignment will provide more details and could lead to further action, as stated by WBSM.
