In a significant bust at the Laredo World Trade Bridge this past weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a large shipment of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of over $8.1 million. In the details provided by a CBP press release, it was disclosed that the seizure took place on January 24, marking one of the larger drug hauls at this particular port of entry.
The interdiction started when a 2003 Volvo 760, ostensibly hauling industrial machinery, was directed for a more in-depth secondary inspection. During this process, a combination of a trained canine unit and non-intrusive inspection technology led to the discovery of about 890 pounds of the substance, believed to be methamphetamine. "This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to public safety and securing our borders against the threats of illegal drug trafficking," said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry, in a statement made by CBP.
Certified as a significant victory against the torrent of narcotics that assail our borders, the CBP move reflects their ongoing efforts in the war on drugs. Homeland Security Investigations special agents are now taking over to investigate the details of the large seizure.
