A Tennessee man, Austin Simpkins, has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse and neglect following a lengthy investigation into the death of his four-year-old son, Turner Simpkins, in 2023. As reported by WKRN, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) alongside the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, conducted the investigation after the deceased child was found at a Poplar Ridge Road residence in Chapmansboro.

Authorities determined that Turner died from chronic blunt force injuries and malnourishment, and forensic evidence led to classify his death as a homicide. The girlfriend of Turner's father, Shannon Leigh Elliott, was previously indicted on multiple charges including first-degree murder. Following a conviction, she was sentenced to a minimum of 51 years before parole eligibility, WSMV reports. To further investigate, agents developed information about a pattern of prolonged abuse that Austin Simpkins did not report nor attempt to stop.

On Monday, Cheatham County Grand Jury returned an indictment against Austin Simpkins, charging him with one count of aggravated child neglect and three counts of child abuse and child neglect or endangerment, according to FOX 17. He was subsequently arrested and is currently held on a $500,000 bond. The charges are the result of the extensive work by law enforcement to uncover the circumstances leading up to Turner's untimely death.

The case has since been unfolding, shedding light upon the grave realities of child abuse within the home. "During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that the child died from chronic blunt force injuries and malnourishment, and the manner of death was homicide," the TBI said, as per WKRN.
