An employee at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was fatally injured Monday morning in an accident on the tarmac involving an airline ramp vehicle, police and airport officials reported. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department stated officers responded to the scene around 9:38 a.m. following the incident, as detailed in a WBTV report. Further confirmation by airport representatives acknowledged the involvement of an airline ramp vehicle, tragically resulting in the individual’s death at the location.
Airport operations were not "significantly" affected due to the accident the airport officials said, adding, "This morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., a single-vehicle accident involving an airline ramp vehicle occurred at Charlotte Douglas International Airport" and that emergency services were dispatched promptly, however despite the swift response an end was met that no amount of preparedness can stay, as conveyed in a statement obtained by WBTV report. Witnesses at the scene described a flurry of emergency vehicles encircling the incident locale, with one passenger reporting a delay in their inbound flight as a result of the nearby emergency response.
A demonstration of sympathy came through an official airport statement expressing, "Our deepest condolences go out to the employee's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time." The airport has also extended support to the investigation currently being carried out in collaboration with the airline and first responder units and has offered the assistance of on-site chaplains to those in need, as per information from WCNC.
After the incident, airport officials have not shared details about the employee or the fatal event, as the investigation is still ongoing. One witness reported seeing the employee, who seemed to have been hit by the vehicle. The airport has not released the identity of the deceased or explained what led to the accident. More information is expected as the investigation continues. Officials from the airport and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have been contacted for more details.
