A Chicago man, 19-year-old Peter Swensen, finds himself facing serious charges following a tragic DUI crash in Oak Lawn that left a 27-year-old father dead and his 7-year-old daughter in critical condition. The crash occurred early Tuesday morning near the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue, as reported by WGN-TV. Swensen, who was allegedly under the influence, is charged with reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence, and driving under the influence causing death.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the collision happened when Swensen ran a red light at nearly 90 miles per hour, striking a vehicle with Eglin Manuel Castro Alvarez and his young daughter inside, who were southbound on Cicero. The force of the impact pushed the family's car up against a vacant oil change business. Alvarez was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. His daughter suffered multiple spinal fractures among other serious injuries and was first taken to Christ Hospital before being airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital.
At the scene, police detected the smell of alcohol on Swensen's breath, and court documents state he admitted to consuming two to three espresso martinis a couple of hours before the crash. His blood alcohol content was recorded at .153. In light of the catastrophic consequences, a judge denied requests for detainment with pre-trial conditions that included no driving and a 12-hour home confinement, as mentioned by WGN-TV. Swensen's next court appearance is scheduled for January 16.
