Early Tuesday morning, a pedestrian suffered serious injuries following a collision that involved an SUV and a semi-truck on the Southwestern side of Chicago. According to ABC7 Chicago, the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. near the Marquette Park neighborhood at the 6700 block of Western Avenue.
A 31-year-old woman driving an SUV reportedly turned left into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a southbound semi-truck, operated by a 35-year-old man. After being struck, the semi slid, overturned a bus shelter, and hit a 66-year-old male pedestrian. As a result of the crash, the bus stop was left in rubble and caused the rerouting of local CTA buses.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with a broken femur and serious lacerations. According to NBC Chicago, he remains hospitalized in serious condition. Following the crash, emergency services were quick to arrive on the scene, where footage captured a bus shelter knocked onto its side and the area cordoned off, obstructing nearly a block.
The driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries and subsequently issued multiple citations. Charges include speeding, failure to yield to a vehicle in the intersection, not obeying a turn signal indicator, driving without insurance, and with expired plates, confirmed by Chicago police. The semi-truck driver did not report any injuries. Affected by the accident, southbound #49 Western buses were temporarily rerouted through the morning hours, as indicated by the Chicago Transportation Authority.
