The Oakland neighborhood in Chicago's 2nd (Wentworth) District is on high alert after a series of armed robberies occurred there earlier this month. According to an official Chicago Police Department community alert, victims were lured through social media under the guise of buying or selling an item. Upon arriving at the agreed location, they were directed to an alley where a gunman demanded their money and, in a chilling escalation of violence, shot them.
These brazen acts of violence took place, one on the 800 block of E. 40th St. on January 4, at approximately 7:35 p.m., and another on the 4000 block of S. Ellis on January 11, around 12:10 p.m. In each instance, the assailants, described as two African American males, fled the scene on foot, as per the CPD. These planned attacks through social media demonstrate a predatory strategy, exploiting the trust and transactional nature of online exchanges.
In response to these incidents, the Chicago Police Department has issued an advisory urging the public to remain vigilant. "Always be aware of your surroundings," the advisory recommends, adding to "Report suspicious activity immediately." The alert also advises calmness if confronted and emphasizes the importance of noting any distinguishing characteristics of the assailant.
Vital to the aid of law enforcement, is the community's cooperation. "Never pursue a fleeing assailant; provide the information to the police," the community alert continued, placing the safety of the public as a paramount concern. For those who may witness such an incident, obtaining contact information could prove invaluable. The CPD strongly advises that individuals dial 9-1-1 immediately after an incident and remain on the scene when it is safe to do so. More details on the armed robberies and safety suggestions can be found on the Chicago Police Department's official website.
