Shopkeepers and residents alike are on high alert after the Chicago Police Department issued a community alert to inform the public of the recent increase in these forceful break-ins where perpetrators are shattering the quiet of the night along with storefront windows and doors. As reported by the Chicago Police Department’s website, the incidents have followed a similar modus operandi, where a masked offender, clad in dark attire has managed to forcibly enter businesses and make off with cash from inside the businesses' registers.
The troubling pattern of burglaries began unfolding on January 16 and has continued, affecting a spectrum of locations including the 5000 block of W. Irving Park Rd. and various blocks along N. Lincoln Ave., N. Halsted St., and N. Broadway St., within a span of just six days. The latest incidents occurred on the 4300 and 4000 blocks of N. Elston Ave., and again on W. Irving Park Rd. The perpetrator has been described as a male, menacing in a black hat, black gloves, mask, dark clothing, and carrying a black backpack.
Community members are urged to ramp up their vigilance and ensure the perimeter of their property stays well lit. Business owners, perhaps, now more than steel and brick, recognize the importance of sturdy defenses and the value of solid, watchful collaboration.
