Residents in the Austin and Belmont Heights areas are being alerted to a string of car break-ins and burglaries by the Chicago Police Department. According to an official statement, these incidents have occurred in both the 16th and 25th Districts, involving unknown intruders using unspecified objects to smash windows of parked vehicles and pilfer belongings inside.

The occurrences took place between December 30, 2024, and December 31, 2024, on blocks including N. Sayre, N. Nordica Ave, N. Odell Ave, and N. Oketo Ave. During these incidents, items were stolen, and garage door openers were also taken in two of the cases which the criminals then used one to break into a garage adding insult to injury for the victims. Three male suspects on foot and another driving a silver/gray sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, have been tied to the crimes, but no arrests have been made as of now.

Officials urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to law enforcement. In their advice, "Always be aware of your surroundings," they encourage not confronting the assailants but instead focusing on remembering any distinctive characteristics which could aid police investigations. If anyone happens to witness such incidents, they are encouraged to get in touch with the authorities and, if possible, donate any video surveillance footage to detectives, this could be crucial to solving the case.

The Chicago Police Department also advises that, in case of an encounter with a perpetrator, victims should attempt to remain calm and never pursue the fleeing culprits; vital information about the suspect should instead be handed over to the police. If someone approaches you claiming to have witnessed the event, ask for their contact information so they might assist police further.
