A series of armed robberies has shaken several Chicago neighborhoods, prompting a community alert from the local police department. The incidents, which involved handguns, occurred across the Humboldt Park, Near North Side, and West Town areas, affecting the 11th, 12th, 18th, and 25th Police Districts. According to the Chicago Police Department's report, groups of 4 to 5 unidentified males in their teens to early thirties, armed and masked in black attires, emerged from stolen vehicles to confront and rob their victims.

In these alarming spates of crime, which occurred on January 17 and 18, victims were threatened with black handguns and forced to relinquish their belongings. After taking the property, wearing black ski masks and dark clothing, the perpetrators retreated to their vehicles, a silver Kia Sportage, a black Hyundai Tucson, and a blue Hyundai Elantra, and fled the scene, as detailed by the CPD. Several victims were also physically assaulted, with some being pistol-whipped or battered by the offenders.

The incidents, all happening within a concentrated timeframe, point to a bold and coordinated criminal effort that endangers the community fabric. Last Friday, multiple robberies were reported on the 1700 block of W. Superior, the 500 block of N. Western, the 2500 block of W. Grand, and the 900 block of N. Damen—all West Town. The following day, Humboldt Park saw a continuation of these crimes, with additional reports emerging from the 1400 block of N. Karlov, the 1000 block of N. Avers, the 800 block of N. Pulaski, the 3800 block of W. North Ave., the 4300 block of W. Thomas, and the 1600 block of N. Springfield. The Near North Side was not spared, with an incident on the 1400 block of N. Cleveland Ave, as reported by the CPD.

The police urgently advise the public to note any distinguishing characteristics of assailants and to not engage but instead, immediately call 9-1-1. "'Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.).' 'Never pursue a fleeing assailant; provide the information to the police,'" the alert stresses. They also reiterated the importance of valuing life over property and not interfering with a crime scene until authorities arrive. For those approached by witnesses, it is crucial to obtain their contact information.

The police are seeking the public's assistance to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this crime spree. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement immediately.
