The 17th District Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert regarding a series of commercial burglaries focused on garages within the district. According to a notice published on the Chicago Police Department's website, unidentified individuals have gained entry into victims' garages, extracting tools, lawn care equipment, and electronics before disappearing with the stolen items.
The incidents occurred in the early morning hours of January 18, with two reported burglaries on the 3200 block of West Belle Plaine Ave. around 3:50 a.m., and on the 3200 block of West Berteau Ave. at approximately 4:35 a.m. The suspect has been described as a male in his mid-30s to 40s, standing between 6'02" and 6'03", and weighing around 200 pounds, dressed in a reflective vest. This information was disclosed in the same community alert by the Chicago Police Department.
In response to these burglaries, the Chicago Police offer several recommendations to the community. To prevent future incidents, residents and business owners in the area are urged to keep their property perimeters well-lit and to report any suspicious activities immediately. The instructions advocate for securing doors and windows, promptly repairing any damages, and utilizing video surveillance if available—saving a copy of the footage in the event of a crime. The Chicago Police Department emphasizes the importance of not tampering with the crime scene and to call the police immediately if victimized.
Witness engagement is also encouraged; if witness to the incident is present, their contact information should be requested.
