The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for residents and food delivery workers operating within the 12th District (Near West), specifically beats 1225, following a spate of robberies targeting individuals in the area. According to the CPD's release, multiple late evening incidents have been reported where groups of two to three male African American suspects, clothed in all black with face coverings, have emerged from either dark alleys or unlit locations to commit their crimes.
These offenders, believed to be between the ages of 16 and 23, have been described to usually don black hooded sweatshirts, black ski masks, and black pants. In some instances, they've utilized the darkness of the surroundings to their advantage, only to hastily request food delivery to a specific address, subsequently ambush the deliverers—one brandishing a black handgun—threaten them, and proceed to forcibly remove personal items before fleeing on foot.
The robberies have taken place at various times and locations across the Near West Side, with the police report highlighting several incidents, including the 2100 block of West Van Buren St. on January 1st and 4th, the 300 block of South Leavitt St., and the 2100 block of West Gladys Ave. on January 5th.
In order to avoid falling victim to these criminal acts, the department advises individuals to carefully plan and to be sure to vary their routes when possible. Getting acquainted with the local neighborhood, remaining vigilant for suspicious behaviors, and avoiding unnecessary interactions with strangers are additional precautions that can be taken. In the unfortunate event of a confrontation, remaining calm and preserving the scene for law enforcement is essential. The CPD further stresses the importance of immediately contacting the police and providing as detailed a description of the offenders, including any vehicles involved, as possible.
