Local businesses in the West Loop Gate area are on high alert after a series of break-ins have left the community shaken. The Chicago Police Department has issued a crime notice informing residents and shop owners of multiple commercial burglaries within the 1st (Central) District.
The incidents occurred in rapid succession early on Monday morning. According to the police notification, the unidentified suspect managed to enter the business by prying open the front door and subsequently made off with cash from business cash registers. The affected locations include the 500 block of W. Lake St, and several locations on N. Clinton St, showcasing a troubling pattern.
The suspect has been described as an African American male, roughly between 5'10" and 6'0" tall, weighing between 150-160 lbs, and was last seen wearing a black-hooded jacket, black & gray jeans, white gym shoes, a black ski mask, black gloves, and carrying a black backpack. This description comes directly from the Chicago Police Department's release and aims to aid the public in identifying the perpetrator.
With safety being a top priority, the Chicago Police advise local businesses to take precautionary steps – such as maintaining well-lit perimeters, securing doors and windows, and ensuring any damage to these entry points is repaired promptly. Moreover, businesses are encouraged to save any available video surveillance footage and avoid tampering with the crime scene, which could hinder investigative efforts. Additionally, they urge anyone with information or who might have witnessed suspicious behavior to report it immediately.
