Earlier this week, a significant industrial accident unfolded at the Everett Mall, necessitating an emergency response from the Everett Fire Department. As reported by the City of Everett, the incident occurred when a large crane, in use for the construction of a new business within the mall, toppled over, prompting firefighters to arrive on the scene just shy of 10 a.m. after alarms were set off by the activation of the sprinkler system.
The fire department relayed to the press that upon their arrival, it was evident the crane had fallen onto its side, damaging the structure and instigating the water flow. While operating the crane, a worker managed to escape with his life, but not without two construction workers sustaining injuries inside the mall's expansion site. A statement from the Everett Fire Department confirmed that "One worker was treated and released at the scene, while the other was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged," according to the City of Everett.
In a turn of events, a second crane had to be brought in to aid with the removal of its fallen counterpart. Officials from the Everett Fire Marshal's Office have noted that the dismantling and extraction of the damaged equipment are anticipated to take several days. In an additional statement made by the City of Everett, various experts, including structural and electrical engineers, alongside representatives from Snohomish County PUD, were present to assess the situation and to ensure that the area was safe and stable.
