Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons has stepped into the national arena, landing a spot on the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors. His election was announced following the NLC's 2024 City Summit in Tampa, where his peers from across the country voted him in for a two-year term. Simmons' new role will see him providing strategic guidance spanning federal advocacy, governance, and membership affairs for the NLC, according to the city's official release.
He's also been tapped to join the NLC Executive Committee and the Finance Committee, positions appointed directly by the NLC's current President. On these committees, Simmons is entrusted to navigate the waters of policy and programming, with a particular focus on the relationship with the Trump Administration. As he assumes these responsibilities, his involvement is intended to echo the voices of local governments at the highest level.
The NLC serves as the primary advocate for urban municipalities across America, striving to forge robust federal-local partnerships. Board members, such as Simmons, are tasked with setting the organization's strategic agenda. "As a member of the Executive Committee, I will have the opportunity to represent Coral Springs at the highest level by providing critical and honest feedback to the NLC President, Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio, so that he can execute his vision," Simmons said in a statement shared by the City of Coral Springs.
Board members, such as Simmons, convene in March, June, and November to shape the future of the NLC and its initiatives. NLC President Steve Patterson remarked on the importance of the board: "The Board of Directors is integral to developing the vision and priorities for the National League of Cities," as per the City of Coral Springs website.
