Nashville residents are grappling with a spike in vehicle break-ins as the new year unfolds, with East Nashville and Bellevue neighborhoods particularly impacted. As reported by FOX 17, East Nashville saw an estimated 56 vehicles broken into early Sunday morning, despite increased patrolling by Metro Police.

Residents have expressed their frustration. One, captured on her BLINK video doorbell camera, recounted a familiar feeling when her car fell prey to thieves again. Meanwhile, Bellevue residents are dealing with a similar situation where, according to WKRN, around two dozen cars were violated at an apartment complex. Victims like Joshua Heard lament the recurring losses and the financial burden for repairs, with costs like $600 for fixing his broken windows.

In what appears to be, a sustained string of crimes over the holidays, nearly 70 cars have been reported broken into in East Nashville alone. An 18-year-old victim, Izzy Cassidy, told NewsChannel 5, "I couldn’t believe it was my car because I knew I had locked it, and I thought that would be enough.” Cassidy added, “But I guess not.” The upsurge in thefts has residents like Kelly Cohane doubling down on precautions and expressing a heightened sense of alert.

In 2024, over 1,200 guns were swiped from vehicles, despite the vehicle theft operation initiative which has led to over 1,000 arrests since its inception in February 2024. Recovered were more than 220 firearms and 540 stolen vehicles, as per WKRN. Still, residents feel the sting of starting the new year on a somber note, with personal property, and a sense of security snatched away in the night.
