The Englewood neighborhood is grappling with a series of armed robberies, according to a recent community alert from the Chicago Police Department's 7th District. Reports indicate that the series of thefts are marked by a similar modus operandi, with offenders believed to be two African-American males donned in black ski masks and armed with handguns, boldly demanding property from their victims.
Details from the community alert show that three incidents have recently shaken up the area. The first taking place on January 18, 2025, at the 300 Block of West Garfield Blvd. at 9:00 p.m. A preceding robbery occurred on December 24, 2024, at the 1100 Block of West Garfield Blvd. around 4:00 p.m. and another on December 20, 2024, on the 800 Block of West Garfield Blvd. at 0920 a.m.
While the Chicago Police have provided descriptions, the face-concealing attire has made it difficult to identify the robbers. Sporting black hooded sweatshirts in addition to the ski masks, the suspects have successfully eluded identification and capture, retreating to areas unknown after the thefts. In a chilling pattern, offenders approach victims with a handgun and demand their belongings with no regard to the time of day.
The police are urging residents and visitors of Englewood to be vigilant and proactive in enhancing their personal safety. "Always be aware of your surroundings," the alert advises, adding that reporting suspicious activities could prevent further incidents. Victims or bystanders are encouraged to note any distinguishing characteristics of assailants, such as "scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc." Chicagoans affected or witness to the crimes are being asked not to chase the fleeing assailants but to instead "dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible," steadfast in the pursuit of community security.
