In a criminal case that has caught the attention of Douglas, GA residents, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has made a consequential move by arresting James A. Sirmans, a 52-year-old from Fitzgerald, GA. Sirmans faces charges involving insurance fraud in connection with previous investigations into altered death certificates. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance John F. King was responsible for securing the arrest warrants, charging Sirmans with two counts of Insurance Fraud and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud, according to the GBI release.
Meanwhile, a related investigation has led to the arrest of Chris Johnson on numerous felonious counts, including Theft by Deception, Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud, and six counts of Violation of Vital Records Registration. Additional charges relate to discrepancies in his funeral home's operations, specifically the mishandling of bodies and vital records. After being taken into custody by the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office, Sirmans has been released on bond, while Johnson remains detained at the Coffee County Jail, the GBI reports.
Further investigation into the Johnson Funeral Home has revealed an additional 4 of the 18 remains found last October. The GBI has notified the families of those identified, yet, out of respect for privacy, identities remain undisclosed. Efforts continue to pinpoint the identities of the remaining 2 bodies. Moreover, the GBI Crime Lab is in the process of verifying if indeed the cremains turned in are human remains and are being sent to the correct families, an endeavor fraught with the emotional vulnerability of all impacted families. The Criminal Investigations Division of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance John F. King assists the GBI in this investigation, which scrutinizes irregularities in insurance proceeds related to these matters.
